AQIS Methyl Bromide Standard requirements (Australia)
Monday, July 27, 2009
The Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service (AQIS) has officially notified industry of clarification to their acceptable treatment certificates where Methyl Bromide has been used for shipments arriving in Australian ports on or after August 1st 2009. Please visit this link for an example of an approved Treatment Certificate under the new scheme. The important point to note is when plastic wrapping has been used, not only does the declaration need to clarify whether the Methyl Bromide fumigation took place before or after the plastic wrapping, but declaration must be made as to whether the slashing/perforation has been done in "accordance with the AQIS Wrapping and Perforation Standard". This statement MUST be included with every plastic wrapping declaration to be valid for shipments into Australian ports. Declarations that do not include the correct wording on the treatment certificate will be rejected by AQIS and will require an additional treatment. AQIS Wrapping and Perforation Standards are as follows: To meet AQIS perforation requirements for fumigation, impervious materials must contain not less than four (4) perforations of 0.6 cm diameter/100 sq cm or five (5) perforations of 0.5 cm diameter/100 sq cm. Plastic wraps containing numerous pinholes (at least 6.45 holes per square sq cm), frequently used for transportation of fruit and vegetables, are also acceptable. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes please do not hesitate to contact our office at any time. Submitted by: Rob Pinkerton NSW Manager Ross Fehlberg Pty Ltd (Inc.
